Santa Monica Place - R.I.P.

January 31, 2008 [<<][>>] [back to archive index] [no comments]

The Santa Monica Mall closed its doors for the last time today. Bargain hunters browsed the few remaining open stores for killer deals, but judging by their empty hands, the deals were just not there. Plenty of old men sitting on benches with blank stares, wondered what memories they were trying to hang on to, but decided not to ask just in case of of TMI... I saw an artists renderings of the new mall replacement, and it looks freaking sweet! Out with the old and in with the new. Looks like there will be a dining deck on top with a view of the ocean, and they're going to make it seamless with the 3rd street promenade, I guess they mean turning it into "the grove".
We had some good years at the old Electronics Boutique, now reduced to a rubble filled drywall cubicle. Remember what a day looked like back in the 90's? Wake up, play soccer or basketball in front of freds kitchen window until he woke up, (most likely due to the generals loud voice), fight over who got to play with abduls rc car, play tetris, go to beach, stop by the mall, visit the westworld arcade, eat garlic bread from the 99 cent store my mom used to make, along with "celestes" personal pizza, make fun of the general spending $600 on a neo geo, be hypocrites and enjoy playing the neo geo, play f-zero pretending it was a multi player game and with quasi surround sound from karls genius placement of the generals portable bose speakers, play super mario kart, play mortal kombat on karls arcade machine while the neighbour kids drooled outside the door, and so on, and so forth... The good old days, still a bittersweet memory.
